New date, new venue for the Nationals as Hampshire Badminton Association take the reigns.
After a successful two years in Wycombe, the English National Championships will head back out on tour from 2019, offering fans in new parts of the country a chance to see top-class badminton live.
And the flagship tournament on the domestic circuit will return to its traditional February date in the calendar.
For 2019, Westgate Badminton Centre in Winchester will host the Nationals from 1-3 February as part of a new, innovative approach to the staging of the Championships. The move to bring counties back much closer to the delivery of the ‘Nationals’ is intended to reinvigorate relationships between county badminton associations, its local community, volunteers and potential partners.
Winchester becomes the 21st location in the 54-year history of the English Nationals.
Over the past 10 years, the Nationals have been touring the country, delighting fans in Bolton, Derby, Manchester, Crawley, Milton Keynes and culminating in record crowds in Wycombe.
Adrian Christy, CEO of Badminton England said “I am delighted that the Nationals are going out on the road again. It is always our intention, wherever possible, to offer badminton fans across the country a chance to see their favourite players up close.
“I am also thrilled that Hampshire Badminton Association has shown such energy and enthusiasm in wanting to bring the Nationals to the wonderful City of Winchester. I cannot wait to see the show they put on for the badminton community.
The English National Badminton Championships remain the pinnacle event on the hugely popular domestic tournament circuit and has courted the very best of English badminton since 1964. In that time, over 100 individual players have won National titles.
